The Duel of the Titans: TSG Backnang vs. JSV Speyer in the 1st Men’s Judo Bundesliga South

The duel between TSG Backnang and JSV Speyer in the 1st Men’s Judo Bundesliga South on Saturday is under completely new auspices.

After the JSV emerged victorious in this matchup for several years in a row, this time the team from Backnang is the clear favorite – not only in the duel with Speyer, but in the league as a whole. The TSG has strengthened itself with several top fighters who competed for KSV Esslingen last season.

JSV required

Esslingen withdrew its team from the Bundesliga. It is not clear how many of Backnang’s international stars will compete. After all, the World Cup was just a week ago. Nevertheless, it seems clear that the JSV, which started the season very strongly with two draws against the top teams from Abensberg and Leipzig, is facing a huge challenge.

For the first time in the round, bad luck with injuries struck with full force. Newcomer Lukas Klemm, who the Speyer team secured from last year’s Esslingen team and who started sensationally with four fights and four wins, is expected to be out for several months with a torn ligament in his elbow.

Ray of hope Gochilaidze

In the weight class up to 73 kilograms, a trio is missing: Philip Müller, Michel Adam (broken foot) and Luca Boeßer, who was injured at the German Police Championships. Another trio will be competing in the European Cup for under-21s in Graz, Austria: Felix Bächle (up to 60 kilos), Mahomed Khakimov (- 81kg) and Pierre Ederer (- 100).

One bright spot is that Dimitri Gochilaidze is back after his strong fifth place at the World Championships. “In the upper weight classes we can compensate for the losses to some extent. In the lower ones it is sometimes a bit too much. Even if we don’t yet know who Backnang can field, it is clear that we are definitely the underdogs this time,” said JSV team manager Michael Görgen-Sprau.
