The Emotional Farewell of Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Veterans: Herrmann’s Knee Surgery and Future Plans

Borussia Mönchengladbach’s 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt on May 11, 2024 was marked by great emotions. Patrick Herrmann (r.) and Tony Jantschke (2nd from right) were on the pitch for Gladbach at Borussia Park for the last time.

Curious situation: From a sporting perspective, the operation is bearable, but he will still be out at Borussia!

One more week and then it’s done! That’s certainly what some Borussia Mönchengladbach fans will think after a disappointing season. A new phase of their lives begins for two foals after the game at VfB Stuttgart on Saturday (May 18, 2024, 3:30 p.m.).

Gladbach professional in Cologne? After the season we go under the knife

For Tony Jantschke (34) and Patrick Herrmann (33) it is a farewell tour in stages: Since there is an away game on matchday 34, there were already great emotions at the last appearance in Borussia Park last Saturday (May 11th).

It was a packed day for both of them: the official farewell part took place before the game against Eintracht Frankfurt (1-1), and both played during the 90 minutes. Afterwards there were emotional scenes with fans, teammates and family – and an interview marathon.

There was also some new information from the two Borussia veterans – including that Herrmann still has a rather unpleasant appointment ahead of him.

He can’t completely close the professional football chapter after the Stuttgart game. One consequence of 14.5 years of Bundesliga football still needs to be addressed: Herrmann said on Saturday that he is still undergoing surgery on his knee.

This no longer plays a role for Gerardo Seoane (45), the Swiss is no longer responsible for Herrmann after the 34th matchday. The 33-year-old will then stay with Borussia – apparently his colleagues in the sponsorship department will have to wait a little longer until Herrmann starts his new job.

When asked when Herrmann would start at the office, he replied: “When exactly, we’ll have to see. I’ll probably need knee surgery after the season. I still have to have something done, I’ll be out for a few more days. Then it starts and then I look at what they’re doing up there.”

“Those up there” refer to the branch employees who have their offices a few steps above the cabin wing in Borussia Park.

So that Herrmann can continue to do so without any problems in the future, he still has to undergo an operation. But the original Borussian can laugh about it. “Not yet! To prevent that from happening, they now have to make a few improvements,” he said when asked whether an artificial knee joint was necessary.

In keeping with Cologne’s support for Borussia in the relegation battle, thanks to 1. FC Cologne’s 3-2 win against Union Berlin, Gladbach was saved after the 33rd matchday, and Herrmann went to the cathedral city for an operation.

Dr. Peter Schäferhoff (M), here with Jörg Schmadtke (l.) and Peter Stöger on February 20, 2016, has already played a few Gladbach guest games with 1. FC Köln.

Knee specialist Dr. Peter Schäferhoff (69), team doctor at 1. FC Köln since 1996, will most likely carry out the procedure. “I was told that he does good knees, that’s the most important thing,” said Herrmann. “But I don’t have an appointment yet.” The foal is jumping over his shadow, after all, Schäferhoff’s practice is in the city of his arch-rival.

Herrmann no longer has much time pressure to be back on the pitch for summer preparations. For the first time in a decade and a half, the foal icon can enjoy what is probably the most strenuous phase of the season for any Bundesliga professional.
