César Luis Menotti, one of the most important men in the history of Argentine football, died. The man from Rosario, the architect as coach of the first star of the National Team in the 1978 World Cup, died this Sunday at the age of 85 after two health problems in recent weeks and multiple hospitalizations.

Although he had a good career as a footballer, mainly in the Rosario Central of his loves and with brief spells in Racing, Boca and Pelé’s Santos, Flaco reached his splendor as a coach. Not only for his achievements, but for having left a school to follow that endures over time with hundreds of disciples: Menottism.

– “You can stop running, stop playing for long minutes… The only thing you can’t do is stop thinking.”

Menotti began his journey on the substitute benches with a brief stint at Newell’s, but it was the colorful 1973 champion Huracán that catapulted him to a National Team that came from one role to another. He knew how to right the ship, with his style, to conquer the world from home, in ’78. The following year, with a brilliant Diego Armando Maradona (whom he had to leave out of the Major League), he also achieved it at the youth level in Japan.

After the tough elimination from the ’82 World Cup, he left the position and went to lead the Diez in Barcelona, where he won three titles. There he also began to forge the endless duel with Carlos Salvador Bilardo, his successor in the Albiceleste and leader of a completely antagonistic thought, which divided the waters of Argentine football at the end of the 20th century.

Menotti also managed Boca in two periods, had three spells at Independiente (plus one as manager) and worked at Atlético de Madrid, River, Peñarol, Rosario Central, Sampdoria and two Mexicans -Puebla and Tecos-, until his retirement in 2007.

Always an authoritative voice, in recent times he dedicated himself to being a man of decision and permanent consultation in the management of the national teams. He was key to patiently supporting the process led by Lionel Scaloni in the Major, who without previous experience went from interim to champion of America and the world.

His legacy will be eternal. For this reason, a countless number of sports figures expressed their sadness this gray Sunday over his physical departure. From Lionel Messi, through Lionel Scaloni, to Ubaldo Matildo Fillol and Pablo César Aimar, who is named in honor of him. A large part of the Argentine soccer clubs of all categories also fired him.
