Vienna Metrostars Sweep Traiskirchen Grasshoppers at Hoppersfield

The Traiskirchen Grasshoppers hosted the Vienna Metrostars at Hoppersfield on Sunday. In two hard-fought matches, the home team had to accept a sweep against the top team from Vienna.

“High scoring”. No word describes Game 1 of the doubleheader in Traiskirchen better than this. The home team took the lead in the first inning through Phillip Eckel and Kyle Ashby, before Markus Trimmel made it 3-0 with a home run in the second inning. The Metrostars had no way to counter the Grasshoppers’ “lightning start” in the first two innings, before all hell broke loose in the fifth inning. The Metrostars’ offense scored nine (!) times. Sammy Hackl scored first, before Claus Seiser, Weatherly, Jonathan Swanson and Mo Hackl put the visitors in the lead. After a home run by Richard Alzinger, Dominik Löffler, Benni Salzmann and Sammy Hackl also found their way “home”. The Grasshoppers countered, but had to admit defeat in the first game with a score of 14:16.

Both teams start Game 2 where they left off in the first encounter of the day. The Metrostars scored in the first inning through Löffler and Sammy Hackl, the Grasshoppers through Eckel. In the second inning, the scoresheets remained empty. In the third inning, there were home runs to marvel at again: Sammy Hackl hit for the Metrostars, Kyle Ashby returned the favor for the Grasshoppers. Then nothing happened for a long time – until the seventh inning, when the Metrostars scored through Josh Topper after a single by Löffler.

In the eighth inning, there were three Metrostars RBIs by Dittrich, Seiser and Weatherly before Eckel scored a home run for the Grasshoppers. Ashby then scored. Nothing else happened in the ninth inning. With the 7:4 victory, the Metrostars sealed the sweep in Traiskirchen.
