1. FC Magdeburg’s Impressive Transfer Summer: Squad Planning and Reinforcements for 2024

Magdeburg/DUR – Coach Christian Titz already had a large part of his new squad together at the start of the preseason. Otmar Schork had quickly bagged many transfers, which helped the coach with his work. But the sports director of 1. FC Magdeburg was not only quick.

One has to compliment squad planner Schork on the first interim conclusion of this transfer summer at Krügel-Platz. Or, as my colleague Nico Esche recently put it in the “Magdeburg Blau-Weiß” newsletter about the mood around the club: “You can’t complain.”

After a shaky second half of the season that saw the team avoid relegation, Schork had announced changes and reinforcements. And he delivered: quickly, accurately and creatively.

It is unclear whether and how many of the eight transfers so far will actually be a success. But that applies equally to all 18 second division teams. But Magdeburg’s new signings are encouraging, because FCM has learned from the mistakes and problems of the previous season and has made improvements precisely where there was the greatest need.

1. FC Magdeburg closes its major construction sites very quickly

In attack! Martijn Kaars was brought in, a man who has captured the imagination of the fans. His incredible goal rate in the Netherlands and the fact that the club dug deep into their pockets for their dream player make Kaars a very interesting transfer, which is generating a lot of optimism in the environment.

On the wings! There was a shortage of personnel there last season. Schork reacted and provided alternatives by signing Philipp Hercher, Pierre Nadjombe and Lubambo Musonda. Because Herbert Bockhorn was ultimately retained, FCM suddenly has a surplus of wing players. Unforeseen luxury problems for the club.

And when the first conclusion had already been written, Schork also pulled Marcus Mathisen out of the hat, one of the top defenders of the last second division season. And this despite the fact that no regular central defender has left the club. A transfer that shows: FCM definitely has something planned and wants to take the next step.

1. FC Magdeburg: Squad is probably stronger than last year

FCM quickly clarified the difficult personnel issue of Ahmet Arslan. They are no longer planning on the “big transfer” of the previous summer. That is certainly hard on a human level and not always pleasant, but in the end this clarity is only logical and will ultimately help all parties.

What is also noticeable is that FCM is not losing any key players who are still under contract. There are no major transfer rumors so far, with key players such as Baris Atik, Silas Gnaka and Dominik Reimann either committing to the club or extending their contracts early.

Even though the transfer window is still open for a good two months, 1. FC Magdeburg will probably go into its third second division season with an improved squad. The plan behind this is to build up a substance bit by bit that will at some point allow for more than “just” staying in the league.

The club is currently making very good progress in this direction.
