37 teams compete on the same stage! 2024 “Mayor Cup” Suqian Youth Campus Basketball League kicks off

On the morning of June 29th, the 2024 “Mayor’s Cup” Suqian Youth Campus Basketball League kicked off, with 37 elite teams from primary and secondary schools across the city competing on the same stage.
At the competition site of Suyu Middle School, athletes from each team ran like the wind on the court, passing, shooting, blocking shots, cooperating tacitly, and continuously making wonderful offensive and defensive plays, winning applause from the audience.
Wang Zhen, head coach of the Shuyang County Development Zone Experimental Primary School basketball team, said: “This competition can first improve the children’s self-confidence, improve their basketball skills, make them understand some principles on the court, and form a kind of communication.”
The basketball team of Suzhou Foreign Language School in Suqian City has the youngest players among all the participating teams. Third-grader Zhuang Haoran has loved learning to play basketball from his father since he was a child. He is the starting player of the team and performed very well in the first game, scoring 6 points.
Zhuang Haoran, a member of the basketball team of Suzhou Foreign Language School in Suqian, said: “(I) dribbled the ball a little high. I think basketball is a team sport. Our team was pretty good in this game. I hope we can get a good ranking.”
There are 37 teams and more than 400 participants in this competition. They are divided into 6 groups in three categories: elementary school, junior high school and high school. The champion teams of the 6 groups will be finally decided. The competition will be held from the morning of June 29th to the afternoon of July 2nd, a total of 4 days.
Chief referee Shi Shengli said: “Our referee team has more than 30 people this time. From technical representatives to chief referees and all referees, they are drawn from the functional areas of all counties and districts in our city. Their levels are all above the national level. Our referee team adheres to the principles of fairness, justice and openness to ensure the style and discipline of each team in the competition and to ensure that they can perform at their normal level.”
Starting this year, the Provincial Department of Education and the Provincial Sports Bureau have established a four-level youth campus basketball league system at the school, county, municipal and provincial levels. Since the spring semester this year, schools and counties in Suqian City have actively organized the “Principal Cup” and “County (District) Mayor Cup” competitions, creating a strong atmosphere for campus basketball training and competitions.
Wang Xingjin, director of the Physical Education, Health and Arts Education Department of the Suqian Municipal Education Bureau, said: “The champion teams of the six groups will represent Suqian in the ‘Governor’s Cup’ competition in July and August this year. Through the competition, school sports activities have been further enriched and the physical and mental health development of students has been effectively promoted.”
