38th Season of Dominican Summer League Begins with 51 Teams and Dedication to Nelson Cruz

51 teams participate in the event, made up of prospects from the 30 Major League Baseball organizations, whose academies operate in the DR.

The Dominican Summer League (DSL), considered the largest development league for Major League Baseball prospects, began its 38th season yesterday.

The tournament, the first for many players after formalizing their contracts with Major League Baseball (MLB) teams, brings together 51 teams representing the 30 big tent organizations.

This year’s DSL season is dedicated to Nelson Cruz due to his impressive career in the Major Leagues and his great impact off the field of play.

The opening ceremony was held at Campo Las Palmas, home of the Los Angeles Dodgers, the team that was crowned champion of the 37th edition of the DSL.

Orlando Díaz, president of the DSL, highlighted the relevance of the tournament. He highlighted that after 37 years this is the largest organized baseball league with a total of 51 teams.

“About 900 players from this league have reached the Major Leagues, among them Pedro Martínez, Vladimir Guerrero, David Ortiz and Adrian Beltréwho are immortals of baseball in the United States,” said Díaz.

MLB’s director of operations in the Dominican Republic, Jerik Pérez, and Junior Noboa, National Baseball Commissioner, attended the opening ceremony.

Stars game

One of the most anticipated moments of the season will be the All-Star Game, which will be held on July 21 at the Milwaukee Brewers Academy.

This event will bring together the league’s best talent in a spectacle that promises to be unforgettable for fans and scouts alike.

Los Playoffs

The 2024 DSL playoffs will begin on August 22 with the participation of the six division winners and two wild card teams, selected by their performance throughout the regular season.

These teams will compete for the prestigious title of Dominican Summer League champion.
