4 beautiful hikes to the mountain lakes in the Stubai Valley

Summer from June to September is the ideal time to discover the high Alpine landscape of the Stubai Valley, when the paths are free of snow and the temperatures are pleasant. The 9 beautiful excursions to mountain lakes, often set in the most secret and hidden places, are oases of tranquility and vitality that fascinate hikers in different ways. On their banks there are the “Stoanmandl”, the little stone men, who honor the natural beauty of these places by evoking their depth and mystical strength.

1. THE NEW LAKES PATH IN THE SCHLICK 2000

In the Schlick 2000 area, thanks to the new Galtbergbahn cable car, inaugurated this winter, a new network of paths has been designed which from the mountain station leads to the discovery of enchanting alpine lakes. The lake path no. 10 descends to the panoramic lake Panoramasee, which offers a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains, including the Kalkkögel, known as the “Dolomites of North Tyrol” and where relaxing loungers on the shore invite you to rest.

But first, passing the new Galtalmsee lake you have the opportunity to cool your feet in the water. Those who want to do a more challenging excursion can reach the Galtalmsee lake by going up to the intermediate station of Fronebben, following the Scheibenweg (path no. 6) up to the panoramic lake and then from there reconnecting to the new lake path in the direction of the mountain hut and the Galtalm lake, and the Galtbergbahn mountain station. This is an easy hike from mountain hut to mountain hut, lasting around 3 hours.

2. GUIDED HIKE EVERY TUESDAY ON THE STUBAI GLACIER PATH BETWEEN MORENE AND GLACIAL LAKES

Lovers of nature and nature photography recognize the geological value and water richness of the Stubai Valley. Here lies Lake Mutterberger, at 2,485 meters above sea level, the largest body of water in the region, forged over many thousands of years and fed by the subsoil and meltwater from glaciers, which gives it a blue color and intense green. During the Days dedicated to Glacier Experiences, every Tuesday from 2 July to 3 September 2024 it is possible to discover everything there is to know about the world of glaciers.

The meeting is with the expert guides at 11 am at the Eisgrat mountain station, at 2,900 meters above sea level, followed by the guided hike along the Gletschersteig (glacier path) to the Fernau intermediate station at 2,300 m, where we will delve further the theme of glaciers (glacier levels, marginal moraines, glacial lakes etc…). The activity is mainly in German but is also held in Italian for individual groups upon request. Bringing binoculars can be useful for spotting the abundant wildlife, such as eagles and marmots.

3. THE WILD WATERS PATH: THE FLUID AND EVOLVING MOUNTAIN

The Stubai Valley is also crossed by numerous rivers and streams. The main river of the valley is the Ruetz, fed by glaciers and mountain springs, which guarantee it an abundant water flow and an always constant flow between characteristic rapids and gorges. A trail dedicated to water in all its forms, which follows much of this rushing torrent, and passes waterfalls, alpine lakes and glaciers, is the Wild Water Trail (WildeWasserWeg).

The route connects various natural attractions of the valley and can be divided into several stages, making it suitable for both day excursions and multi-day treks. The main attractions you encounter are the Sulzenau Glacier, the Grawa waterfall with an impressive width of 85 meters and easily accessible from a viewing platform and the Sulzenausee lake which reflects the surrounding mountains and is perfect for a regenerating stop. The Sulzenau Hütte and the Dresdner Hütte are among the best-known huts along the trail, offering accommodation and catering. Some sections of the trail are also accessible to families with children, while others require good physical condition and technical preparation.

4. NIGHT EXCURSION TO GRAWA WATERFALL

To admire the Grawa waterfall on a truly special night and combine hiking with good regional cuisine, you need to mark the dates of 23 July and 8 August 2024 in your diary, to travel the “WildWaterPath” by moonlight, from the Raffein bridge to Grawa Alm passing by the majestic illuminated waterfall, evocative music and art shows and delicious stops at the food stands and mountain refuges.
