Exchange of ideas in the morning and making friends through ball in the afternoon

A harmonious gathering of Chinese and American youth

After the competition, there was lively exchange among Chinese and American youths.

In the 2024 “Gulingyuan” Sino-US Youth Exchange Week, there were both high-end and serious ideological collisions and energetic activities of making friends through playing football. On the 27th, at the Fuzhou Haiqing Camp, Chinese and American youths gathered together to deepen exchanges and enhance friendship.

Clash of ideas

On the morning of the 27th, at the “Theme Tea Party: China and the United States in Action on Climate Change”, Chinese and American guests introduced the problems faced by China and the United States in addressing climate change, the measures taken, and the prospects for cooperation. They believe that China-US cooperation can set a benchmark and provide reference for other countries.

“Zhenjiang’s low-carbon experience is of reference significance to the world.” Zhu Xiaoming, director of the Yangtze River Delta Carbon Neutrality Strategic Development Research Institute of Southeast University, shared Zhenjiang City’s experience and practices in actively exploring green transformation, pollution reduction and carbon reduction, focusing on understanding the situation, grasping key points and setting standards.

Diego Montero is the senior director of strategy and international cooperation at C40 (Cities Climate Leadership Group). He believes that under the trend of global warming, cooperation between China and the United States in areas such as carbon emissions can provide a reference for the world.

Diego Montero’s views were shared by Dr. Zhu Liucai. Zhu Liucai is the chief expert of the Center for International Cooperation and Exchange of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment. He has led a team to conduct long-term research on green and low-carbon financing policies and domestic and international consulting services. Zhu Liucai first shared the results of China-US cooperation in the field of climate change at the government level, local cooperation, and non-governmental level. He said that climate change is one of the most serious challenges facing mankind, and China and the United States need to work together in multiple fields to actively respond.

Liao Lingyun is an associate professor at the College of Landscape Architecture and Art of Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University. She took Wuyishan National Forest Park as an example to explain the methods, practices and strategies adopted by Wuyishan National Forest Park in responding to climate change from the perspective of biodiversity.

What is decarbonization? How do you view the role of electric vehicles in carbon emissions? How can carbon emissions and economic development be balanced? During the Q&A session of the themed tea party, Chinese and American youth spoke enthusiastically and interacted actively, creating a lively atmosphere.

Making friends through football

On the afternoon of the 27th, Chinese and American youth further enhanced their friendship through competitions in table tennis, basketball and baseball.

American brother and sister who can play table tennis

On the afternoon of the 27th, a world champion master class and table tennis friendly match were held in the Haiqing camp. The young people from both countries worked together, and the small table tennis ball “jumped” back and forth, winning rounds of applause.

Harriet Parkinson, a senior student from Brigham Young University in Utah, USA, has not only been fascinated by Chinese culture since she was a child, but also plays table tennis. She told reporters that she started learning table tennis from her brother when she was 7 years old, “I even have a table tennis table at home.” It is worth mentioning that her brother also participated in the 2024 “Gulingyuan” China-US Youth Exchange Week and showed his skills on the basketball court.

Basketball game full of energy

On the basketball court, young people from China and the United States formed several competing teams.

“Good job!” Jerry from the United States high-fived his Chinese friend He Genzhong just after coming off the court. They formed a small group. Although they lost the first two games, they were still very happy and encouraged each other.

“Whether a goal is scored or not, everyone applauds. It feels really good.” He Genzhong is a foreign language teacher at Fuzhou University. He said that basketball is almost a universal language for the whole world.

When He Genzhong was chatting with the reporter, Steven from Michigan patted his shoulder and greeted him. “He is a lawyer, and we are already good friends.” He Genzhong said. Steven’s Chinese is not bad. He told the reporter that because his grandparents speak Chinese, he learned Chinese through the Internet to facilitate communication. As he got to know China better, he liked China more and more. He plans to live in China in the future. “It’s very lively here, I like it very much.”

Baseball brings new experience

In the baseball class, there were obviously more Chinese youths, and most of them were playing baseball for the first time. A volunteer named “Zhenxi” from Fuzhou University also joined the class.

“This is my first time to touch baseball, it’s quite interesting.” “Zhenxi” said that she thought baseball was hard like softball, but unexpectedly it was soft. This feeling was the same as her new American friend’s experience of Chinese medicine pulse diagnosis, and she was amazed. “Our surprise is due to different cultural backgrounds. Only by really touching, experiencing and communicating can we really understand.” “Zhenxi” said that this was her biggest feeling this time. For this reason, when the reporter asked her name, she said: “Just call me ‘Zhenxi’, I hope that the Chinese and American youth will cherish the friendship.” (Reporter Chen Dan Wang Guanghui/Text Bao Hua/Photo)
