Korean badminton star Ahn Se-young (Samsung Life Insurance) advanced to the round of 16 of the 2024 Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour Indonesia Open (Super 1000) with a come-from-behind victory over a Japanese rookie player.

World No. 1 Ahn Se-young defeated No. 24 Tomoka Miyazaki with a game score of 2-1 (20-22 21-7 21-11) in the women’s singles round of 32 at the tournament held in Jakarta, Indonesia on the 5th.

Miyazaki, born in 2006 and four years younger than Ahn Se-young, is Japan’s next-generation ace. Until early September of last year, he was outside the world’s top 100, but he significantly improved his ranking by placing 3rd in Indonesia Masters I, winning Indonesia Masters II, and finishing second in Korea Masters.

Ahn Se-young, who was in her first match with Miyazaki, unexpectedly had to play for 61 minutes after giving up the first game in a close match. However, she dominated Miyazaki by tying her with 7 points in the 2nd game, and finished the game with a large lead, scoring 7 points in the 3rd game in a row. In the round of 16, Ahn Se-young will compete with world number 40 Ponpicha Chekiwong (Thailand) to advance to the quarterfinals.
