Indonesia has made its choice: its candidacy for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036 will be supported by its future capital, the city of Nusantara. Indonesian President Joko Widodo has agreed to place the new city, whose construction work has just begun, at the center of the system. The future capital would have an ultra-modern football training center and several other sports facilities.

The president of the Indonesian Olympic Committee, Raja Sapta Oktohari, confirmed the decision in a statement: “We welcome the president’s decision to continue to nominate IKN (the Indonesian name of the future capital) for the candidacy for the Olympic Games of 2036. We will fulfill this task and work hard to be the first ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) country to host the Olympic Games. »

Raja Sapta Oktohari confirmed to local media that Indonesia was participating in the dialogue phase with the IOC Future Host Commission. “With IKN as a site, we are optimistic because one of the points that will be evaluated is the choice of a site that ensures the sustainability and legacy of the project,” suggested the Indonesian Olympic leader. Indonesia was already a candidate for the Summer Games in 2032, awarded by the IOC to the Australian city of Brisbane. His application file was then supported by Jakarta, the current capital.

Most recently, on March 30, 2024, the President of the Indonesian Olympic Committee said that the committee was still engaged in dialogue with the IOC and that an observer delegation would visit the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris and travel Additionally follow the preparations of the organizing committee for the 2028 Summer Olympics.
