Alcaraz will start the defense of Wimbledon against Estonian Lajal

MADRID, 28 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz will begin the defence of his title at Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam of the season that starts next Monday, against young Estonian Mark Lajal, according to the draw held on Friday.

The player from Murcia, winner of Roland Garros and who starts in the ‘big’ London team as third seed, will also go on the same side of the draw as Italian Jannik Sinner, current world number one.

For that possible duel in a hypothetical semi-final, the player from El Palmar will have to overcome the obstacles that he finds in his path, starting with a new rival in his career, Lajal, 21 years old, number 262 in the ATP ranking and who has accessed the main draw from the qualifying phase.

From there, on his horizon towards the round of 16 he would have above all a possible tough rival in the third round in the figure of the American Frances Tiafoe, while in the fourth the best seeded seed is the Frenchman Ugo Humbert. In some theoretical quarterfinals, names such as the Norwegian Casper Ruud and the American Tommy Paul would appear, who will make his debut against the Spanish Pedro Martínez.

Of the rest of the Spaniards, Alejandro Davidovich and Roberto Carballés will have tough debuts against the American Sebastian Korda and the German Alexander Zverev, respectively, Roberto Bautista will face the German Maximilian Marterer, Pablo Carreño against the Dutch Tallon Griekspoor, and Jaume Munar and Alejandro Moro against the British Billy and Jacob Fearnley, respectively.

As for the rest of the favorites, Sinner will have a tough draw since he will begin his journey at Wimbledon against the German Yannick Hanfmann and could have a tough second round against his compatriot Matteo Berrettini, a finalist in 2021, and on their way to the quarterfinals they could also be the American Ben Shelton, the Chilean Nicolás Jarry or the Canadian Denis Shapovalov, while the Serbian Novak Djokovic, seven-time champion, will debut against the Czech Vit Kopriva.

The women’s draw was also drawn, where it stands out that the defending champion, the Czech Marketa Vondrousova, will start against the Spanish Jessica Bouzas. In addition, Paula Badosa will also debut against a Czech rival, Karolina Muchova, and in the second round she could face the young Russian Mira Andreeva. For her part, Sara Sorribes will face the runner-up of the last Roland Garros, the Italian Jasmine Paolini, Cristina Bucsa against the Romanian Ana Bogdan, and Rebeka Masarova against the Russian Liudmila Samsonova.

As for the favorites, the Polish Iga Swiatek, in the ‘big’ that is most difficult for her, will have a debut against another ‘Grand Slam’ winner such as the American Sofia Kenin, champion in Australia in 2020, the American Coco Gauff, second favorite, and the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, third, will start against her compatriot Caroline Dolehide and the American Emina Bektas, respectively.
