Alcohol Policy at Wimbledon: No Ban, but a Pricey Pleasure

The misbehavior of some tennis fans at this year’s French Open resulted in a strict alcohol ban being enforced in the stands. The organizers at Wimbledon have now also addressed this problem.

Anyone who wants to treat themselves to a beer, a glass of sparkling wine or other alcoholic beverages at this year’s Wimbledon tournament (July 1 to 14) has now officially been given the green light by the organizers.

As the organizers of the traditional Grand Slam in London told the newspaper “The Independent”, unlike the organizers of the French Open, they will not impose a ban on alcohol in the stands. There are no plans to change the rules from last year, the All England Lawn Tennis Club said in a statement.

Translated into permille, this means: Each visitor is allowed to take either one bottle of wine or champagne or two glasses of beer with them to their seat.

Alcohol at Wimbledon: An expensive pleasure

There is one small catch, however: the prices. Last year, a fan had to pay 7.55 British pounds (approx. 8.85 euros) per pint of beer. A popular gin drink cost 11 pounds (approx. 13 euros).

For a bottle of Lanson champagne, which costs between 30 and 40 euros in regular stores, fans at the 2023 Wimbledon tournament had to pay just over 100 euros. A bottle of wine cost around 35 euros. In the best case scenario, prices will remain stable this year, but a small but noticeable increase is more likely.

Big trouble at the French Open

The French Open was forced to ban alcohol this year because many spectators crossed the line, insulted players, shouted during rallies and, in extreme cases, even threw objects at the stars.

Numerous professionals expressed their displeasure about the conditions in the first week. Tournament director Amelie Mauresmo finally took action and put an end to the alcohol levels in the stands.
