At the Challenger tournament in Sassuolo, Weis defeated the 23-year-old Argentinian Thiago Augustin Tirante in three sets, 6:4, 2:6 and 6:3. What was so special about this victory in the round of 16? The Bozen native has never before beaten such a highly ranked player in the world rankings. Tirante is number 124 in the world, and up to that point a win against number 129 was Weis’ personal record.
The 27-year-old has now made it back into the top 300 in the world rankings. Weis is currently ranked 297th. His personal best (273rd) dates back to April of this year. In any case, at the clay court Turin in Emilia-Romagna, Weis will face the winner of the match between Peruvian Ignacio Buse (ATP 332) and Dutchman Jesper De Jong (146) in the quarterfinals.
