Alexander Zverev Looks Ahead to Quarterfinals at French Open After Exhausting Victory

Deeply relieved, but pretty exhausted: Alexander Zverev immediately switched to regeneration mode after reaching the quarterfinals at the French Open.

“Now I have played eight and a half hours over the past three days and I need to get fit again,” said Zverev: “The tournament is not over for me, I want to continue.”

It was only at 1:40 a.m. and after 4:11 hours of play in a five-set thriller that the 27-year-old Olympic champion defeated the Dane Holger Rune. Zverev was relieved to celebrate his 4:6, 6:1, 5:7, 7:6 (7:2), 6:2 victory, which had already been preceded by a five-set win against Tallon Griekspoor.

In the round of the last eight, Zverev will have to be back to full strength, as his opponent Alex de Minaur from Australia is in strong form. However, Zverev has a 7-2 record against the world number eleven and wants to reach the semi-finals in Paris for the fourth time in a row.

The German number one missed a number of chances against Rune for a long time and had to fight hard. But Zverev stayed mentally composed and was the more consistent player in the fifth set. “I’m proud to be in the quarterfinals,” he said. The success was well deserved and Zverev’s dream of his first Grand Slam triumph is still alive.
