American Businessman Strikes Deal for Thiago Almada: A Transfer Saga Unfolds

The American boss had planned it. While rumors of negotiations between Eagle Football Group and Atlanta United were gaining more and more momentum, John Textor came out of the woods in recent hours by announcing that he was on the verge of making an offer to the MLS franchise for Thiago Almada. Bingo for the businessman, since an agreement was reached between all parties, according to Argentine journalist César Luis Merlo, this Wednesday.

A brief stint at Botafogo before joining OL in 2025

Already in agreement with the 23-year-old midfielder, Textor is preparing to pay 20 million dollars (around 19 million euros) to buy out his two and a half year contract. The 2022 world champion will initially commit until 2029 with Botafogo, a club belonging to Eagle Football Group. But we should not rely on the duration of this lease since the player trained at Velez Sarsfield could quickly move on to other horizons. Indeed, the 1m72 right-hander is expected to play in Brazil until next December, before joining OL during the winter transfer window. This operation, facilitated by the subtleties of multiple ownership, risks once again fueling debate.

Thiago Almada (19 caps, 8 goals) was acquired for 15 million euros by the American team in February 2022. His value is today estimated at 27 million euros according to the site Transfer market.
