Analyzing Archery Scenes in Cinema: Taskmaster’s Misstep in Black Widow and a Chance for Redemption in Thunderbolts

An archery expert has analyzed several archery scenes from some of the most popular movies and series in cinema and has been especially harsh on a scene that starred Taskmaster in the 2021 film, Black Widow.

In a recent Business Insider video, traditional archery expert Jim Kent evaluated several archery scenes in movies and TV shows. Among the scenes analyzed was Taskmaster’s Black Widow from Marvel. Kent provided a detailed critique on the accuracy and technique used in these scenes, grading each clip and offering commentary on the verisimilitude within the cinematic context.

In the case of Taskmaster, who fires explosive arrows during a city chase, Kent was especially critical. He gave it a score of 4 out of 10 on YouTube, mentioning that “arcs don’t do that… I can’t think of a plausible way for that to work.” While he acknowledged that the scene looked spectacular, he explained that much of the bow technique was unrealistic. The tension on the bow strings, the way it was held, and the difficulty of using it while wearing the villain’s mask, made the scene unbelievable in the eyes of the expert.

Taskmaster in Thunderbolts: A chance for redemption?

Black Widow It was not a particularly beloved film within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and some even consider it the worst Marvel film or series led by a woman. One of the most notable criticisms was the underrated use of Taskmaster, a villain with the ability to replicate the combat styles of virtually anyone. Instead of being a formidable threat, Taskmaster had a relatively brief appearance and was unable to fully showcase his abilities.

However, Taskmaster played by Olga Kurylenko will return in Thunderbolts, offering the MCU a chance to redeem several villains in that film. Though it may seem like a tall order for a new set of characters. The first MCU film The Avengers (2012) proved that it’s possible to make underexplored heroes feel needed quickly. There’s hope that Taskmaster’s next outing will allow his character to be elevated. Most important to this would be good combat choreography, which would allow Taskmaster’s abilities to be effectively explored for a longer period of time.

The importance of authenticity in combat scenes

Understanding how realistic a movie scene is does not necessarily impact its effectiveness. However, much of Taskmaster’s appearance in Black Widow was not successful, and the unreality of these scenes may be part of that problem. Committing to a genuine, realistic understanding of how combat works could allow these scenes to look and feel better on screen in every MCU project. We hope that Thunderbolts Learn from the criticism directed at Black Widow and present a more authentic and exciting representation of Taskmaster.
