Andrew Wiggins Drops Out of Canadian Olympic Basketball Team: What Happened?

Just as it sounds. What seemed like a complete Canadian Dream Team for the 2024 Paris Olympics will no longer be so. Yes, the North Americans will add Jamal Murray to the cause, but they already know that they will not have Andrew Wiggins, who has communicated his resignation to the federation 10 days after appearing on the shortlist of 20 players.

For Canada it has been a surprise. The team’s general manager, Rowan Barrett, has indicated that he saw the player wanting to be at the Olympic event and that it was his team, Golden State Warriors, that prevented him from being in the capital of France this summer.

“For us, Andrew was fine. We were talking to him constantly, he’s been training for weeks and weeks getting ready for this. Then I got a call from Golden State a day or two before training camp saying he wasn’t coming. So, from what I’ve heard, this is not Andrew’s decision, it’s his team’s decision, and that’s why he’s not with us,” he said.

Questioned by such accusation, the Warriors have limited themselves to commenting The Associated Press that it was a mutual decision between the team and Wiggins. Despite this, Barrett insists that he feels bad for the player.

“I’m disappointed for him. He’s been through a lot over the last few years and then obviously his mom was an Olympian and this is something he’s been looking forward to and working towards,” he said of Wiggins, who has not played for Canada since 2021.
