Angela Casarola Makes History with Bronze Win at U17 European Championships

A fantastic Angela Casarola won the bronze medal at the U17 European Championshipsthe first for Italy in this edition of Novi Sad.

Just 16 years old, the very young Italian wrestler competes in the 49 kg category and already has a very respectable list of achievements: with this year’s U20 gold she has achieved her sixth Italian title, while at a continental level she already has a silver among the U15s.

Her match: this morning the Como native won with great speed over the Swedish Emmy Nerell, closing the match with a score of 7-1. Having reached the final for the bronze, she found herself facing the Romanian Electra Garaiacu against whom there was no history. Angela won by backhand when she was already leading the match with a score of 8-0. Very good!

Naomi Liuzzi in the 53 kg and Sara Sorbello in the 61 kg were eliminated. Liuzzi won two matches and only lost in the quarterfinals against Maryia Khrushchova (AIN) with a score of 8-0. Previously, she had beaten Bulgarian Nataliya Boyadzhieva 6-2 and Spanish Sheila Mondrago Garcia 6-0 and unfortunately she was not reprised. Sorbello lost in the round of 16 against Georgian Nini Tsitsvidze, who was then eliminated in the next round.

Today, however, the last act of the U17 European Championships began, dedicated to men’s free wrestling and which saw Anthony Apolinario, Giovanni Danise and Jacopo Giusti competing for the Italian national team. Unfortunately, none of the three managed to qualify for a final in their respective weight categories.

Apolinario, in the 55 kg category, was defeated in the round of 16 by Bulgarian Esad Bozari 10-0. The latter then lost in the semifinals, denying the Italian the possibility of the repechage.

Giusti, who fights in the 80 kg, scored two good victories: the first against the Belgian Atilla Yovchev 7-0 and the second against the Lithuanian Matas Juscius 16-5 in the round of 16, in a great recovery with an overhead kick and a couple of courses on land, as correspondent Maurizio Casarola tells us. However, Giusti then gave way to the Armenian Sahak Hovhannisyan in the quarter-finals and unfortunately for him too the possibility of a repechage disappeared.

Finally, Giovanni Danise was unable to pass the first round of the 65 kg competition against the Romanian David Boicea.

Tomorrow the last day of the tournament’s preliminaries will take place, with the last free runners competing who will try to reach the finals on Sunday.
