Anthony Taylor to referee Red Devils’ crucial match against Ukraine as Euro 2020 group stage nears end

Just before 8 p.m. on Wednesday we will know whether the Red Devils will reach the eighth finals at the European Championship and therefore stay on the date a little longer. In the meantime, important news has already emerged.

The designations for the final matchday of the group stage have now been reviewed. Anthony Taylor will be the referee for the Red Devils’ match against Ukraine on matchday 3 of the European Championship.

Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn are Taylor’s English assistants, while 66% of the VAR assistants also come from the same country: Stuart Attwell, David Coote and German Marco Fritz. The Swede Glenn Nyberg is the fourth official on duty.

Anthony Taylor was already active at this European Championship, including the match between France and the Netherlands. There he disallowed a goal by Xavi Simons due to positional offside by Denzel Dumfries – a dubious decision.

Belgium – Croatia as a last memory

At the previous major tournament – the World Cup in Qatar – the Englishman was the referee in the match between the Red Devils and Croatia. That match ended in a 0-0 draw, not enough for the Belgians.

Of course, a draw is always enough this time, so we shouldn’t panic in that area just yet. All indications for the group phase have now been completed and the first whistle will blow on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
