Who will Germany face in the round of 16? The decision has not yet been made. ARD expert Bastian Schweinsteiger has his concerns about a certain opponent.
Munich/Frankfurt – Germany is in the round of 16 of the 2024 European Championship.
This was already clear before the final group match against Switzerland on Sunday evening. In Frankfurt, it was ultimately just a question of whether the DFB team would win Group A or whether they would have to let the Swiss team go first.
So, of course, there was speculation before the match as to who the Germans’ possible opponent in the round of 16 might be. One thing was certain: The DFB team will definitely play in the round of 16 next Saturday (29th).

If Germany wins the group, their possible opponents from Group C would be England, Denmark, Slovenia or Serbia. The latter in particular provoked a particular reaction from one of those involved before the Switzerland match.
This of course refers to Bastian Schweinsteiger. The ARD expert is known to be married to Ana Ivanović, and they now have three children together. What’s special is that his Ana comes from Serbia, a possible opponent of the German team in the round of 16.
When ARD presenter Esther Sedlaczek asked her colleague about a possible round of 16 match between Germany and Serbia, the ex-DFB star first blurted out a loud “Srbija” – the pronunciation in the national language. Schweinsteiger was visibly pleased.

“But seriously? If it’s Serbia, that will have a lot of potential for conflict at home, won’t it? Basti?” Sedlaczek wanted to know, as usual, directly.
And what does Schweinsteiger say? “Wow! We’ve got emotions in the house, I’m pretty sure of that,” said the 2014 World Champion, who doesn’t expect his wife’s team to reach the round of 16: “I’m assuming that the Danes or the English will do it in the group. But of course, if the Serbs win the game, then she’ll suddenly be there.”

But for Schweinsteiger, that’s probably not possible. Will that mean trouble at home? No one knows. It’s possible that Germany won’t even face an opponent from Group C. That is, if national coach Julian Nagelsmann’s team loses against Switzerland.
Then the second-placed team from Group B awaits. That means Italy, Croatia or Albania. They would also be uncomfortable opponents, but at least there would be no trouble in the Schweinsteiger household. (smk)
