The Dutchman was under contract with Chelsea for six years. However, due to numerous loans, he only made 15 appearances for the London club.
BVB loses key players
In Dortmund, Maatsen impressed with good performances in the Bundesliga and Champions League. BVB clearly wanted to keep him, but ultimately let a purchase option in the loan contract expire.
In April, Maatsen’s father Edward told the Dutch magazine Voetbal international: “We are working on him staying at the club.” The transfer fee is said to have been at least 40 million euros – transfer expert Fabrizio Romano even speaks of 45 million.

BVB’s purchase option was also said to be around 40 million. Dortmund would have liked to negotiate it down – according to SPORT1 information, Dortmund’s pain threshold was 30 million euros – but the surprising fourth-place finisher in the last Premier League season with coach Unai Emery obviously offered more.
In their search for a replacement for left back, Dortmund are reportedly interested in Ferdi Kadioglu from Fenerbahce Istanbul.
