Austria make a surprise at Euro 2024. Coming from unseeded, Das Team was even able to outperform French and Dutch in the hell group.
Group D Euro 2024 could be said to be a hellish group. The star-studded European teams, namely France, the Netherlands, Poland, are competing in one group, plus Austria, which is also filled with a number of well-known names.
On Tuesday (25/6), Group D played its final match. The Netherlands faced Austria, while France was challenged by Poland.
At the Olympiastadion, Berlin, the Netherlands lost dramatically 2-3 to Austria. The Oranje Team’s goals were scored by Cody Gakpo and Memphis Depay, while Austria took the lead through an own goal from Donyell Malen, and Romano Schmid and Marcel Sabitzer.
Austria’s victory made Das Team, nicknamed Austria, top of Group D with 6 points from 3 matches, one loss and two wins.
That success was also helped by minor results French, against Poland. Competing at the Westfalenstadion, Kylian Mbappe et al were held to a 1-1 draw. At Euro 2024, Austria itself is not the favorite. Some predictions do not make it a favorite, rather than countries like Germany, France, England and Portugal. Fourfourtwo wrote that the odds coefficient for Austria to win was 50/1, far below other giant countries.
In their first match in Group D, Austria also started its campaign with a defeat. Sabitzer et al were defeated by France 0-1 in the first match.
Only in the second match, Austria was able to win 3-1 over Poland, then followed by overcoming the Netherlands 3-2. Austria is also the most fertile team in Group D, scoring 6 goals and conceding 4 times.
Austria now joins many other strong teams in the round of 16. There are already Germany, Spain, Portugal, who also have the status of winners of their respective groups. Then there are Switzerland and Italy who have also confirmed their qualification.
In the round of 16, Austria will face the runners up of Group F. The knockout round itself will be held starting on June 30.
