Austria’s chances of reaching the round of 16 at the European Football Championship in Germany are already excellent before Tuesday’s match against the Netherlands in Berlin.
The four best of six third-placed teams make it to the round of 16. Since this format was introduced at the 2016 European Championship in France, three points and a goal difference of -1 have always been enough to advance as third-placed team. After the 0-1 defeat against France and the 3-1 win against Poland, Austria is on three points and +1 and could therefore afford a narrow defeat against “Oranje” to advance. But then the big calculations could begin, especially since three groups will only be completed after that.
The following criteria are used to determine the ranking of the best third-placed teams in the group:
higher number of points
better goal difference
more goals scored
higher number of wins
lower number of points in fair play evaluation (three points each for red and yellow-red cards, one point for yellow cards without yellow-red)

After the shock draw of Croatia and the defeat of Albania, we can hardly be denied promotion.
Croatia, third in Group B, remains behind us with 2 points. In Group A, Hungary is trembling in third place. However, with a goal difference of 2:5 (-3). This means that only a 5:0 defeat would see the Hungarians overtake us in the table of third-placed teams.
