Austria’s Vardges Ghazaryan makes history at Under-18 European Championships

Austria was represented in the final block for the first time on the third and last day of individual competition at the Under-18 European Championships in Sofia (BUL). Vardges Ghazaryan (+90/SU Karuna/W) fought for bronze against Yauheni Morau (AIN) after victories over Catalin Plesca (MDA), Oleh Fesenko (UKR) and Dwayne Korevaar (NED). Despite a waza-ari lead, the 16-year-old Viennese was narrowly defeated in the end and finished fifth. In the preliminary round, Ghazaryan also suffered a defeat after a waza-ari lead against Nadar Kobaladze (GEO), number 5 in the youth world rankings.

“We weren’t far off from a medal. Vardges performed very well in all of his fights today. Fifth place is well deserved and he can be proud of his performance,” said national coach Martin Grafl.

Claire Pröll (-70/UJZ Mühlviertel/OÖ), Michaela Höllwart (+70/ESV Sanjindo Bischofshofen/S) and Lorenz Horngacher (-90/JZ Innsbruck/T) were eliminated early. The mixed team competition will take place in Sofia on Sunday.
