Avilés says goodbye to a fellow countryman: this is how some of his former teammates remember Davo Armengol

“He is a countryman, an example on and off the field.” After eight years at the club, Avilés and Davo Armengol have parted ways, as LA NUEVA ESPAÑA reported. The goalkeeper from Oviedo, who will sign for Mosconia, says goodbye, becoming one of the best players in the recent history of the blue and white team, being the 11th player with the most games under his belt. If we limit ourselves to goalkeepers, the only name who has defended the Suárez Puerta goal more times has been Santi Calvo. In total, there are eight campaigns, divided into two stages, that he has defended the Avilés shirt, being one of the most beloved players by the fans.

Davo made his debut with Avilés on 3 August 2011, in a Copa Federación match against Universidad Oviedo, with Ricardo Bango as coach. His first spell as a blue and white lasted until 31 May 2015. On that date, Avilés was defeated by Eldense, managed by the current Sporting coach, Rubén Albés, and was relegated to the Third Division. Before that, however, he was a protagonist in the promotion to Second B, when the blue and whites fell to Coria but finally managed to get promoted after buying the place, and he came close to the Second Division in 2013/14. That year, the Avilés team made it through the first round after eliminating Cartagena and, when it seemed that they had one foot in professional football after beating Llagostera 2-0 at home, they finally fell defeated in Catalonia by 3-0 and were left on the verge of glory.

After playing for Marino and Caudal, Davo returned to his footballing home five years later, just after football stopped due to the pandemic and coinciding with the opening of the current ownership. Except for this season, the Oviedo native has been a regular in the Avilés nets, coming close to promotion to the First Federation last year, when the white-and-blues fell in the play-off final against Granada B. This season he was part of the team that achieved the fateful salvation against Manchego, being a key piece, thanks to his experience and savoir-faire, within the locker room.

In total, of the eight seasons that Davo has been at Avilés, in five of them he can be considered the starting goalkeeper. He started as a regular in 11/12, with David Alemán as a teammate, but in the following season Alejandro Rebollo managed to snatch the position from him. The year of the near promotion to the Second Division he regained his status, with Ángel Díez as a substitute, although the following season he returned to the bench due to competition from Alejandro García. The three seasons following his return to Suárez Puerta he was the starting goalkeeper, sharing the posts with Jimmy Robledo, Mario de Luis or Moha Ramos and this year Álvaro Fernández has definitively stolen his place in the starting eleven.

“Davo is an example on and off the field, an exceptional footballer,” says Emilio Cañedo, Avilés’ coach last season and now Davo’s future manager. “The numbers are there, he is a historic player for Avilés. He has always had a magnificent loyalty to the club and has been a great teammate,” says the Oviedo native. Although Cañedo made the decision to leave him off in the play-off for promotion to the First Federation, he never had a bad face from the goalkeeper, who he says contributed more than anyone else to help the group. “Now I am delighted and happy to have him with me,” he says.

Alex Prendes, a centre-back who shared three years of his career with Davo, has no doubts: “He has been the best teammate I have ever had, because of the trust between us and because of all the help he has given me.” “More than a teammate, he is a friend,” explains the Avilés native, who when the club was promoted to the Second Federation had to share a room with the goalkeeper. “I only have good words for him. There is a certain age difference, but he is a true friend. For me, he is like a father,” he says.
