Bagnaia, Aldeguer and Veijer lead the way on day one in Assen

The Italian Francesco Bagnaia (Yamaha), in MotoGP; the Spanish Fermín Aldeguer (Boscoscuro), in Moto2; and the Dutchman Collin Veijer (Husqvarna), in Moto3, were the fastest this Friday in free practice for the Dutch Grand Prix, the eighth round of the motorcycle World Championship.

In the practice for the top category, with the threat of storms, ‘Pecco’ clocked a 1:31.340 that allowed him to dominate a session in which the Spaniards Maverick Viñales (Aprilia) and Alex Márquez (Ducati) were second and third, one and three tenths behind, respectively.

Meanwhile, fourth place of the day was occupied by Aleix Espargaró (Aprilia), who in the final stretch suffered a hard fall in the chicane that forced him to be evacuated on a stretcher and that canceled all subsequent laps, preventing the drivers from improving their times. .

The leader of the premier class, Jorge Martín (Ducati), was fifth; Marc Márquez (Ducati) finished sixth and Raúl Fernández (Aprilia) ninth, all among the riders who will contest Q2, which will be contested by other riders such as Alex Rins (Yamaha), fourteenth; Pedro Acosta (KTM), fifteenth; Augusto Fernández (KTM), twenty-first; and Joan Mir (Repsol Honda), twenty-second.

In Moto2, Spaniard Fermin Aldeguer (Boscoscuro) set the fastest time of the day, a 1:35.912 which becomes the new track record. Japanese rider Ai Ogura (Boscoscuro) and American Joe Roberts (Kalex), who had to be taken to the medical centre and was unable to finish the session after a hard fall at Turn 7 in which he fractured his right collarbone, completed the podium of the day.

Meanwhile, the leader of the championship, Sergio García Dols (Boscoscuro) from Castellón, placed fourth, two tenths behind Murcia. In addition, Arón Canet (Kalex), Alonso López (Boscoscuro) and Manu González (Kalex) finished sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively.

Albert Arenas (Kalex), who suffered his second crash of the weekend during P1, finished tenth, ahead of Marcos Ramírez (Kalex) who also placed himself in the provisional ‘Top 14’. All in a session that was interrupted by a red flag caused by the crash of Czech Filip Salac (Kalex) right at the start.

Finally, in the small-displacement class, Dutchman Collin Veijer (Husqvarna) stood out in front of his home fans and, with a best time of 1:40.259, led on Friday ahead of Japanese Ryusei Yamanaka (KTM) and Iván Ortolá (KTM), second and third respectively, three-tenths behind.

Four other Spaniards made it into the top ten of the day; Adrián Fernández (Honda) finished fourth, just ahead of José Antonio Rueda (KTM) and Ángel Piqueras (Honda), while Dani Holgado (Husqvarna), second in the championship, rounded out the top 10 despite crashing. The leader of the World Championship, Colombian David Alonso (CFMoto), also suffered a double crash and finished ninth.
