Basketball in Paris 2024: Pre-Olympic tournament for Puerto Rico
20 years have passed since that time Puerto Rico surprised the world in Athens 2004. Since then the Puerto Rican men’s team has not returned to the Olympic Games (the women’s team did, which repeats in Paris 2024), but now it has a good opportunity.
Puerto Rico plays at home, repeats the backbone that played the 2023 World Cup and adds a star, Jose Alvarado. They are their weapons to fight for the Olympic quota, although their weak point is the worst possible if they crossed paths with Lithuania: the lack of height. Mexico, on the other hand, will not be able to count on Jaime Jaquez and will rely on a mix of golden veterans and young talents knocking on the door.
Their main rivals for the Olympic place will be Lithuania, sixth in the last World Cup and which, despite the last minute loss of Jonas Valančiūnas will have one of the best centers in the NBA, Domas Sabonis; and to a lesser extent Italy, without Simone Fontecchio but with veterans like Danilo Gallinari o Nicholas Melli.
