Bayern Munich is reorganizing its sports board. Austrian Walter Gfrerer comes from league rival VfL Wolfsburg as the new Head of Performance.

Gfrerer takes the professional players, the FC Bayern women and the juniors at the FC Bayern Campus under his wing with the topics of athletics and performance. The 51-year-old Austrian has worked in both areas in the past; last season he was an athletic trainer at VfL Wolfsburg, before that he was performance manager at AS Monaco and a fitness coach at RB Salzburg.

Eberl: Gfrerer will provide new impetus

Max Eberl is delighted about the new addition to the athletics sector and that FC Bayern has succeeded in “signing Walter Gfrerer as Head of Performance for FC Bayern. He brings with him a wide range of experience from his various positions and will provide new impetus,” says the Munich-based sports director confidently, explaining the new direction on the club’s own website: “In general, we have restructured the sports board area in order to better meet the constantly growing challenges in top international football. It was important to us to consciously rely on people who know what FC Bayern stands for – and where it wants to go. We are convinced that our club is highly professional and well positioned for the future, even behind the scenes.”

Krüger rises

Due to the structural realignment, Kathleen Krüger, formerly Head of Team Management & Project Lead Sport, will now take on a staff position in the Executive Board’s Sports division as Senior Leading Expert Sport Strategy & Development. The 39-year-old will coordinate, evaluate and optimize the connections and synergies of all areas of sport with those responsible.

Maciej Jagiellowicz will be the team leader for the licensed player division, and Samuel Geiler will be moving to his team internally from FC Bayern’s partner support department. Bastian Wernscheid, who previously worked in team management for three years and has been with the club since 2017, has been supporting sports director Max Eberl and sports director Christoph Freund as a sports consultant since January 1st.
