Bazoumana Koné Makes Striking Comeback with Würzburg Baskets

The unlucky player from the last BBL season is fit again and is making his comeback with the Würzburg Baskets. After only being able to play two Bundesliga games in the Würzburg jersey a year ago due to several ankle injuries, Bazoumana Koné is returning after a successful rehabilitation and has signed a contract for the coming season.

Before moving to Würzburg, the 30-year-old playmaker led the PS Karlsruhe Lions to the semifinals of the ProA with 15.6 points and 4.4 assists per game and played for the Ivory Coast at the 2023 Basketball World Cup.

At Würzburg Baskets, he was only able to play in the away win in Hamburg and in the first home game of the season against Ludwigsburg before he injured his ankle twice in training so badly that surgery was required and the season ended early for him.

Würzburg Baskets: Successful team falls apart

Published18.06.2024By Paul von Brandenstein

“Bazoumana Koné came to us very late after the World Cup last year and then had unbelievable bad luck with injuries. But he convinced Sasa Filipovski and me from day one with his work ethic and morale. Now he is fit again and, with a full preseason preparation, will be a German player who will help us with his experience,” says Kresimir Loncar, Sport and Scouting Manager of the Würzburg Baskets.

Bazoumana Koné has been a well-known name in the BBL for more than ten years. He has played a total of 100 Bundesliga games for Bremerhaven, Ludwigsburg, Gießen, Braunschweig and Würzburg. “I am overjoyed and very grateful to the people in charge at Würzburg Baskets for this opportunity and the trust they have placed in me. That is by no means a given after such a long injury,” says the 30-year-old: “I gave everything I had to get fit again. It is a real blessing for me that I can play for Würzburg again. I can hardly wait and am really looking forward to seeing the best fans in the league on the field.” pw
