BBL Season 2024/25: Only 17 Clubs to Compete as Frankfurt Secures License

The 2024/25 BBL season will take place with only 17 clubs. Since only one of the two sporting newcomers, Frankfurt, has received the license, there will be no wildcard procedure.

For the first time since the 2019/20 season, a Bundesliga season will only take place with 17 teams instead of 18. The only party interested in a wildcard, the HAKRO Merlins Crailsheim, decided not to apply for one. “After the extraordinary general meeting of all BBL clubs called at short notice, it is clear that the Wizards’ ideas and the league’s financial requirements for a wildcard of 700,000 euros do not match,” the Merlins explained in a press release on Monday.

A wildcard procedure would have been possible because only one of the two promoted teams, the FRAPORT SKYLINERS, received a license for the coming season. The ProA champions PS Karlsruhe LIONS failed to meet the required minimum budget of 3.5 million euros.

In addition to Crailsheim, the Tigers Tübingen were also relegated this season. They could also have applied for a wildcard, but the Swabians did not do so.
