But the first win against Göttingen broke the spell and the most surprising success of recent years followed: a 108:75 away win at Alba Berlin – a celebration in MBC history. The MBC was now in contention for the playoff spots. Led by the tireless veteran John Bryant (37), who played all 34 league games (8.4 points on average) and was able to give the actual center Martin Breunig some valuable breathing space as a bench player.

But the only constant in the Weißenfelser season was inconsistency. Surprising victories were always followed by series of defeats. But what bothered coach Predrag Krunic (56) the most were the defeats against teams he considered to be on the same level. Defeats in Crailsheim, Braunschweig and Tübingen repeatedly set the MBC back.
And so, after the defeat at champions Ulm on matchday 29, the club was briefly in acute danger of relegation. But thanks to the victories against Heidelberg and Ludwigsburg, they were able to secure their place in the league on matchday 32.

Immediately after the season, coach Predrag Krunic (56) announced his departure after just one season by means of an exit clause. He was the tenth coach in the last six years.
“We have achieved all of our goals, including me personally, after my first engagement in 2016 felt unfinished,” said Krunic, who left the club eight years ago after relegation to the ProA. Seven other players are leaving with him, including top scorer Johnathan Stove (16.4 points on average).
Positive: crowd favorite John Bryant (37) is staying for another two years.

At least Krunic is handing over the MBC to his successor as a first division club. It remains to be seen whether the new coach Janis Gailitis (39) will bring consistency to the coaching position. The Latvian is considered a great talent. He was at his last club VEF Riga for eight and a half years, winning seven championships and three cup victories. Since 2021 he has also been assistant coach of the Latvian national team, which finished fifth at the last World Cup.
