Belgium’s Meunier Returns, Witsel in Danger: Latest Injury Updates for Euro 2020

The Red Devils are preparing for their decisive group match against Ukraine. That match will probably come too early for Thomas Meunier and Axel Witsel. For the latter, the European Championship is even in danger of ending prematurely.

The day before the start of the tournament, the Red Devils played a practice match against Luxembourg. They won 2-0, but they did result in two additional injuries. The damage was particularly significant for Meunier. For a while, there were even fears for the rest of his EC.

Meunier all the way back

The right back did not even travel with the rest of the group to Germany. But he did not leave for a holiday at all. So Meunier remained on Belgian soil, where he has been intensively rehabilitating in recent days with the help of top physiotherapist Lieven Maesschalck.

That turned out to be a good choice, he now rejoined the rest of the selection and was even able to complete a large part of the group training. The match against Ukraine normally comes too early for him, but Meunier may still be useful in the later phase of the tournament.

Fearing for Witsel

For Witsel, the situation looks a lot less favorable. He also suffered an injury against Luxembourg, but did travel to Germany. However, he did not play there and could barely train with the group. Something that has not changed for the time being.

Analyst Philippe Albert fears the worst. According to him, the tournament could end quickly. “Witsel has the kind of injury that could last a long time. It’s a shame, but I have the impression that we won’t see him again at this European Championship,” RTBF reports.
