Basketball Bundesliga club BG Göttingen is continuing its shopping spree in the first league – rather unlike previous years.

Göttingen – After Collin Welp was signed by rival Würzburg Baskets, a second player from the Bundesliga, Deion Hammond (25), is now moving to the Violets. The American played for the MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg last season and has now agreed to join the BGers for the coming season.

“Deion can play at position 2 or 3, is a very good shooter and can score in a variety of ways. His strong body allows him to be physically active at both ends of the field. He also has a very positive winning attitude,” says BG head coach Olivier Foucart about the US guard. “I have been following Deion for two years and would have liked to have signed him last season. We are happy that he has now moved to us and can take the next step in his career here.”

Hammond wore the number 0 jersey for the Ludwigsburg Giants last season. In the Swabians’ balanced squad with seven foreign players, the BG newcomer played 21 BBL games at national level (around 12 minutes of playing time/5.8 points/1.7 rebounds), three BBL playoff games (around 18 minutes/2.7 points/4.0 rebounds) and one BBL cup game (around 19 minutes/13.0 points). Hammond played twelve times in the Basketball Champions League (around 13 minutes/4.1 points/1.4 rebounds).

After graduating from high school in Upper Marlboro (Maryland) in the summer of 2017, the new Violet began studying at Monmouth University in West Long Branch (New Jersey). Hammond played 116 times for the Monmouth Hawks between 2017 and 2021 (around 28 minutes of playing time/13.9 points/2.7 rebounds).

The American began his professional career in the summer of 2021 with the Romanian first division club CSU Asesoft Ploiesti (30 games/29 minutes/14.3 points/3.6 rebounds). After one season, Hammond moved to the Dutch first division club ZZ Leiden, with whom he had his most successful time to date. The US guard played a major role in winning the triple of the Dutch Cup, Dutch Championship and the Dutch-Belgian BNXT League title (26 minutes/14.5 points/3.0 rebounds).

. Current BG squad: Mathis Mönninghoff, Zach Ensminger, Janis Jünemann, Collin Welp, Deion Hammond.

    Patrick returns

Ludwigsburg is also in the spotlight with another personnel issue: Coach Josh King has to leave – but an old acquaintance is to return: John Patrick (56), who led the BG to the EuroChallenge victory in the Lokhalle in 2010. He came to Ludwigsburg via Würzburg, coached the MHP Riesen for nine years before moving to the Chiba Jets Funabashi (Japan) in 2022. (gsd/nh)
