Bo Svensson appointed as new coach of Bundesliga club Union Berlin: A new era begins

Bo Svensson, the new coach of the Bundesliga football club Union Berlin, wants to lead the Köpenickers back to success with a mixture of new and tried and tested methods. “It’s about keeping the good things that Union has done over the years. The values that Union stands for. The culture that is cultivated. But I’m also coming as a newcomer and have new eyes on things and want to set my own impulse,” said the Dane on Wednesday at his presentation.

Union only saved itself from relegation on the last matchday of the previous season, with coaches Urs Fischer and Nenad Bjelica having to leave during the season. Svensson, meanwhile, has a clear idea: “Union has always clearly stood for certain components in the game. They have mastered some areas very well. Compact defending, a cohesive team performance, the physical nature, the strength of set pieces. We will continue to keep that. My idea is to make things more variable.”

Horst Heldt, who succeeds Oliver Ruhnert as sports director, meanwhile announced changes in the squad. “We are all convinced that the players we have under contract are players who will help us. Nevertheless, there will be changes,” he said, adding: “The squad is not yet as big as we imagined. I will leave it open for now whether there is too much or too little.”

According to Heldt, national player Robin Gosens, who is considered a candidate for a transfer, will be on site when training begins next Monday: “He has a contract and we will act accordingly.”
