Bobsled pilot Cipulis will still decide on the continuation of his career, there will be changes in the composition of the pushers / Article

Cipulis could put an end to his career as a bobsledder, while the Latvian Olympic Team (LOV) Zelts, where his entire crew of four was included, no longer has pushers Dāvjas Spriņģ and Krista Lindenblatt. Cipulis plans to announce his decision at the beginning of July.

Changes in the composition of Latvia’s strongest bobsleigh crew

Springis, on the other hand, named the reason for leaving, in his opinion, the unequal distribution of wages in the crew. After the Beijing Olympics, the support system changed, and the crew bobsledders, being friends, discussed what conditions each had.

“It seems unfair to me, I am no longer ready to work for such a salary, and I made such a decision,” Springis explained his departure from bobsleigh. “There is no such thing as a terrible conflict – it is a normal life situation, and I accept it.”

Already in the post-Olympic year, Springis said that he would leave bobsleigh, and that was a possibility until this summer he made the decision to really put an end to the bobsleigh career. Apart from the financial aspect, Springis had no other objections to participating in the bobsleigh team.

“The last few years were fantastic. The only thing is that we could not agree on a fair salary,” added Springis.

On the other hand, the president of the Latvian Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation, Ansis Zeltiņš, admitted that the changes in the composition were unexpected for him, but it should be taken into account that the athletes also look at the perspective and evaluate what they will do after the end of their careers. Zeltins has spoken with Cipuli, who has his own view of the situation.

“We will definitely discuss the reasons and matters in the board,” Zeltiņš told Latvijas Radio. “Perhaps we can change some things in the internal processes. We will also discuss the situation with the pilots.”

The Winter Olympics are already a year and a half away, and they have to qualify in the pre-Olympic season. In the case of Cipulis leaving the Latvian national team, the young and inexperienced Jēkabs Kalenda would become the first pilot. Even if Cipulis stays, in any case, an addition will be needed in the lineup of pushers.
