Borussia Dortmund will play its DFB Cup first round match against 1. FC Phönix Lübeck in Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion. The regional league football team and second division Hamburger SV, the hosts, announced this on Wednesday. The match will take place on August 17 (6 p.m.). As the host club, Lübeck will pay rent to HSV.

“As an event of this magnitude is new territory for the club, 1. FC Phönix Lübeck is very grateful for the professional assistance. Hamburger SV has offered its support in constructive discussions. HSV has the necessary experience and structures to organize a cup match of this kind,” said the Lübeck team.
The club is expecting a record crowd. Its own stadium (Buniamshof/capacity: 3000 spectators) does not meet the safety requirements of the DFB Cup, and the home ground of VfB Lübeck was not an option due to fan rivalry.
Champions League finalist BVB will play its first competitive match of the coming season in Hamburg. It will also be the debut for new head coach Nuri Sahin. The Volksparkstadion is also the venue for the current EURO.
