Boston Celtics Claim 18th NBA Championship Title: Jayson Tatum Leads Team to Victory

Die Boston Celtics sind NBA-Champions.

What: AP

The clock showed exactly 38.9 seconds left in the game when Jayson Tatum collapsed. At the edge of the court, the basketball star put his hands over his face, then his teammate Al Horford grabbed him and shook him, as if he wanted to make it clear to him: Yes, it’s really true! The Boston Celtics are finally NBA champions again.

Shortly afterwards, Tatum pushed his way through a crowd of teammates and staff members, confetti stuck to his shoulders. The 26-year-old still didn’t seem to have fully grasped what he had just achieved: winning 106-88 in the fifth game of the NBA finals against the Dallas Mavericks, the 18th title in the club’s history and the first since 2008. This makes Boston the sole record champion again, ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers (17).

NBA Finals Game Five: Jayson Tatum best Celtics shooter

“Oh my God! It’s a surreal feeling. We did it,” Tatum exclaimed after the triumph. He himself had paved the way to the historic success. With 31 points, he was his team’s best scorer. An achievement that was also appreciated by his teammates:

I can’t say enough about his selflessness. I can’t say enough about his attitude and his approach.

Jaylen Brown on Jayson Tatum

Brown was the second hero of the evening and of a brilliant Celtics season. The 27-year-old contributed 21 points in the decisive final game – and was then presented with the trophy for the most valuable player of the NBA Finals.

“The trophy could have gone to anyone, it could have been Jayson,” Brown said. “I’m sharing this with my brothers and my partner Jayson Tatum – he’s been with me the whole time, so we’re sharing this together.”

Former President Obama congratulates

A declaration of love like something out of a kitschy tearjerker. Tatum and Brown have played 107 playoff games together for the Celtics, more than any other duo in NBA history before winning their first title, according to US media.

Former US President and basketball fan Barack Obama was also happy about the respect, writing on X: “Congratulations to the new champions! 18 titles is no easy masterpiece – well deserved.”

Dirk Nowitzki with encouraging words for Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks, led by German forward Maximilian Kleber, entered Boston with a glimmer of hope – fueled by the 122:84 gala in game four, with which the team had shortened the series to 1:3. But even 28 points from the exceptional Slovenian player Luka Doncic were not enough.

There were encouraging words from Dallas icon Dirk Nowitzki, who led the Mavs to their only title win so far in 2011:

Chin up!!! We will be back!!!”
