Boston Celtics Hit with Devastating Blow: Kristaps Porzingis Out for Start of NBA Season

Shock for the Boston Celtics: Shortly after winning the NBA Finals, the franchise will have to do without Latvian Kristaps Porzingis for around six months. The big man will therefore be out for the start of the new season.

Kristaps Porzingis was absent from the Boston Celtics for more than five weeks in the recent NBA playoffs due to injury, as he was suffering from a calf injury. The Latvian celebrated his comeback in game one of the finals against the Dallas Mavericks – and impressed across the board.

Just one game later, the next bad news followed: the 28-year-old was injured again and will be out for several months as a result.

As the Celtics announced on Thursday, Porzingis had to go under the knife. He underwent surgery on his leg to repair a torn ligament and a dislocated tendon in the posterior tibial muscle.

The European will be out for around five to six months – and will therefore also miss the start of the new NBA season, which begins in October.

Until the Latvian returns, veteran Al Horford will probably replace the big man in the Celtics’ starting five.

Porzingis thanks for support

Shortly after it was announced that he would be out for several months due to his surgery, Porzingis himself thanked fans and teammates for the numerous get-well wishes he received.

“Everything went smoothly. Now I will take the time to get healthy and fit again,” the Latvian wrote on the social network “X”.

This also makes it clear: Porzingis will miss the Olympic Games in France, which start on July 26.

The 28-year-old was originally scheduled to play in the tournament despite his injury, and the Latvians were hoping to be able to rely on their star player until the very end.
