Brazilian Athletes Shine in Venezuela Badminton Open Quarterfinals

Brazil will have two athletes in the quarterfinals of the Venezuela Badminton Open. The world sports stage began on Thursday (13) in the city of Valencia. María Clara Lima and María Julia Nascimento won the first round to advance to the women’s individual stage. Vittorino Lucena was eliminated in the round of 16 but will continue competing in mixed doubles with Maria Giulia.

María Clara Lima was the first to reach the quarterfinals. The 18-year-old athlete defeated the Venezuelan Lusbet Sánchez 2-0 with a score of 21/10 and 21/18. She will now face another local rival in the fight for a place in the semifinals of the tournament. The match against Denis Arvelaes is scheduled for Friday (14), at 11:45 (Brazil time).

Like her compatriot María Julia Nascimento, she lost in her first Venezuelan sport and will face another local athlete in the quarterfinals. This Thursday’s victory was achieved by her in two sets against Bárbara Lamas with a score of 21/14 and 21/13. At 11:45 (Brazil time) on Friday she will return to the court and face Karen Campos for a place in the semifinals.

Mixed Doubles

In mixed doubles at the Venezuela Open, Brazil was also victorious and reached the quarterfinals. The couple of Vittorino Lucena and María Clara Lima defeated the Venezuelans Hoizer Calanche and Valery Velázquez 2-1 (18/21, 24/22 and 22/20). Now they will face locals José Pereira and Karen Campos.

Before winning in mixed doubles, Vittorino Lucena finished his campaign in men’s singles. He lost 2-1 (11/21, 16/21 and 17/21) against Venezuelan Fabricio Rodríguez in the round of 16. Previously, Vittorino defeated the local Wilson Face in the first round in two sets, 21/15 and 21/18.
