Brazilian Defender Matheus Lins Joins Sheriff in Moldova: A New Challenge in European Football

After standing out in Austrian football, Brazilian defender Matheus Lins was announced as a new reinforcement for Sheriff (Moldova) for the next three seasons. The club, which has experience in the group stage of the European Champions League, is in the first knockout phase prior to the Europa League groups in 2024/2025.

Due to this scenario, the 23-year-old player commented on the feeling after signing the contract and presented his most striking characteristics:

“It’s a unique feeling to have this opportunity in my career. I am very happy and motivated for this new challenge. All honor and glory belongs to Jesus Christ, who has guided me this far. Sheriff is a high-level club. Before arriving, I received a video of what the club is like and I can say that it is surreal. Large club structure, diverse fields and cutting-edge technology. Not to mention the big competitions it competes in, like the Europa League”, said Matheus Lins, adding:

“I have great quality with and without the ball, which gives me confidence on the field. I always try to keep possession of the ball and find solutions to start plays with my teammates. I am a defender who values physical confrontation, both in the air and on the ground. When I go into the opponent’s area, I feel like a center forward (laughs), always looking for opportunities to contribute to the score. Finally, I consider it important to understand and assimilate the coach’s style of play. This allows me to make informed decisions and avoid hasty actions.”

Having played in the youth categories of Atlético-MG and Bahia, the player won the Brazilian Under-20 Championship in 2020 and the Baiano Under-20 Championship in 2021. In Austrian football, Matheus was the second defender with the most duels won among the under-23 athletes from the second division, for Bregenz. The information is from Comparisonator, a platform specialized in evaluating the performance of professional players. Afterwards, the Brazilian moved to Austria Lustenau, a first division team.

After his filming in the Old Continent, the athlete commented on his experience in the country. For him, the adaptation process in Austria was fundamental to facilitate his move to Moldova:

“In my opinion, my time in Austria was very important for my development in European football. I think it helped me a lot in terms of adapting and maturing to deal with the style of play. In Austria, football is very tactical, requires physical strength and has a good intensity. I was able to absorb that and, with a lot of work, I performed well during that period.”
