Brice Turang hit Milwaukee’s fifth grand slam in the last eight games in a seven-run fourth inning, and the Brewers cruised to a 7-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.
Freddy Peralta (6-4) and reliever Jakob Junis combined to limit the Cubs’ batters to just two hits.
The Central Division-leading Brewers won their ninth straight series. Milwaukee hasn’t lost a series at American Family Field since the New York Yankees won two of three games in an April 26-28 series.
Peralta was brilliant on the mound for seven innings, notably retiring the last 14 batters he faced.
After Nico Hoerner sent Peralta’s second pitch of the game over the left-field wall for a home run, the right-hander recovered and struck out eight batters while allowing just two hits and two walks. Junis finished the game by pitching the final two innings.
Christian Yelich hit a two-run homer from 422 feet in the fourth to give Milwaukee the lead with one out. Cubs right fielder Ian Happ then misjudged a ball by Rhys Hoskins, who was credited with a single. Sal Frelick later followed up with a base hit for a run with two outs before seeing Turang hit a grand slam against Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks.
It was Turang’s second grand slam in his last five games and his sixth homer of the season, matching his total as a rookie last year. He started Milwaukee’s grand slam series on June 22 in the ninth inning of a 6-4 loss at San Diego. Three of his 12 career home runs came with the bases all loaded.
Hendricks (1-6) allowed seven runs and seven hits in 3.2 innings while striking out three and walking one.
