“Some people told me that Tuchel spoke a little Spanish. I don’t know if he didn’t want to use it. In any case, he didn’t say a word to me, not even ‘hello,'” Zaragoza told Twitch streamer Gerard Romero.

The Spaniard joined Bayern in the winter, but played hardly any role in the second half of the season. Reports from Spain had already emerged in March that Tuchel had never exchanged a word with Zaragoza and that the move was not in his interest. The Bayern coach at the time had firmly denied this, but also explained: “I still can’t speak Spanish, my assistant coach Nico Mayer can. That’s why Nico explains the rules and behavior to him in training. He also described Mayer as Zaragoza’s “main contact.”

Other clubs were also interested in Zaragoza, with FC Barcelona apparently being particularly high in the running.

As the winger has now revealed, there has been contact between his camp and the Catalan camp. “Before I signed with Bayern, there were talks, I spoke to Barca,” admitted the 22-year-old.

“There was a possibility, but nothing had been decided yet, but what was in the press was reality,” he confirmed. The fact that Zaragoza was even on the radar of the big clubs was mainly due to a match against FC Barcelona. While still under contract with FC Granada, he scored a sensational brace against the Blaugrana in a league match in the first half of last season.

Zaragoza admires Kimmich

“It’s one of the best teams in the world,” said the Spaniard about FC Bayern. He justified his decision to go to Munich, but also with the club’s stars: “I wanted to sit in a dressing room with the best coaches and players in the world.”

He is particularly fond of one of the Bayern stars: Joshua Kimmich. “He is crazy, a born competitor. In training and during warm-ups he starts screaming like crazy, he is a star,” Zaragoza praised his teammate.

The winger particularly highlighted Kimmich’s versatility: “Wherever you put him, he plays and performs, he doesn’t care. What he wants is to win, win and win. He is a player who could play in any position because he is top.” But Kimmich is not only a “great player”, but also a “great person”.

In Munich, “everything surprised him”

As much as he admired the Bayern players, his first steps in Munich were difficult. “I left Granada and it was complicated, I had everything there,” Zaragoza recalled. None of the players could speak to him in Spanish. But the young Spaniard was keen to learn and work on himself. In general, however, it was “a great dressing room, they supported me a lot.” He made it clear: “I can’t complain about anything.” Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting in particular helped him a lot at the beginning.

“When I arrived at Bayern, I found it a little hard to believe where I was. I saw Harry Kane, Müller, Musiala, they are top players that I have been watching for many years and everything surprised me,” he recalled. Despite all the challenges, he does not regret his move at all: “For me, it was a unique opportunity and I could not pass it up.”
