Alexander Blessin will be the new coach of Bundesliga football club FC St. Pauli. The club confirmed this. The 51-year-old is moving from Belgian first division club Royal Union St. Gilloise to Hamburg and will take over the position from Fabian Hürzeler. Blessin will be introduced at a press conference this afternoon.
St. Pauli’s sporting director Andreas Bornemann praised Blessin in a club press release: “With Alexander Blessin we have been able to gain an internationally experienced coach. He brings a lot of tactical knowledge and has already worked in the top division in Belgium and Italy as well as internationally.” Information on the transfer terms and the contract term were not initially given.
Blessin is looking forward to his position: “FC St. Pauli has an impressive appeal in Germany and internationally. The club stands for clear values and ambitious work in professional sport. It is therefore a great task to coach the club in the Bundesliga after a long time in the second division.”
FC St. Pauli was looking for a new head coach to lead the team into its first Bundesliga season in 13 years. Since Blessin still had a contract with the Belgians until 2025, FC St. Pauli will most likely have to pay a transfer fee. The club also received money for the transfer of Hürzeler.
FC St. Pauli’s preparation for the new season starts on July 8th.
Former striker for VfB Stuttgart
Blessin, born in Stuttgart, played as a striker for VfB Stuttgart, Stuttgarter Kickers, Jahn Regensburg, VfB Leipzig, Sportfreunde Siegen and Antalyaspor in Turkey. As a coach, he worked in the youth sector at RB Leipzig from 2012 to 2020 and then led KV Oostende and Genoa CFC before moving to St. Gilloise in 2023. FC St. Pauli is his first head coaching position in German professional football.
