BVB transfer target Ferdi Kadioglu: Almost a copy of Ian Maatsen

Ferdi Kadioglu was first mentioned at Borussia Dortmund last November, and in recent days the rumors surrounding the left-back of the Turkish national team have intensified. The new BVB coach Nuri Sahin is apparently keen to sign the 24-year-old.

Kadioglu played against Portugal for the second time at this European Championship in Dortmund – and did well in a Turkish team that was weaker than in the opening match against Georgia. Kadioglu’s profile is a special one and in some respects resembles that of Ian Maatsen, who will probably leave BVB for Aston Villa after his loan.

Kadioglu’s CV alone is unusual. He was born in Arnhem in the Netherlands, and has only been playing for Fenerbahce in Turkey since 2018. In Germany’s neighboring country, Kadioglu enjoyed an education that traditionally places great emphasis on technical skill and ball skills.

As a trained offensive player, he brings with him a high level of versatility. Kadioglu has been placed almost everywhere on the pitch by his previous coaches, except in goal, as a central defender and up front in attack. And he delivered consistent performances everywhere.

Kadioglu has been playing left back for a while now – and that is where BVB is struggling. The injured Ramy Bensebaini is currently working on his comeback and will have to step up his game to make up for his disappointing previous season. Tom Rothe’s future is still unclear, but he may not be in Dortmund next season either.

Kadioglu, on the other hand, would be ready for the next step in his development; he has not yet played more than two Champions League qualifiers at international level. Against Portugal, he showed off his speed and dynamism, and he also showed composure and overview on the ball. Kadioglu could be a good signing for BVB.
