Camavinga’s Crampon Conundrum: Didier Deschamps’ Fury at Slippery Performance

Coming on after an hour of play against Poland (1-1), for the last match of the group stage of Euro 2024, Eduardo Camavinga had trouble getting into the game, notably slipping several times. A story of crampons that infuriated Didier Deschamps.

“Come on Cama, better than that! Come on!” Gesturing in his technical zone, cursing to the right, to the left, Didier Deschamps was visibly dissatisfied with Eduardo Camavinga’s performance against Poland (1-1) on the 3rd day of the group stage of Euro 2024. In addition of the result, a draw conceded in front of the teammates of Robert Lewandowski (author of the equalizing goal, from the penalty spot), synonymous with second place in this group D, this difficult entry into play of the young Merengue midfielder put the nerves of the French coach to the test .

At the heart of the French midfield, the 21-year-old player struggled to assert himself in his duels, constantly making unfortunate slips. The Frenchman told Adil Rami, in an interview with TF1, the reasons behind these clumsiness: studs not screwed high enough…

“I always play in screw-in studs, but there I was constantly slipping so the coach asked me to put on even higher (screw-in) studs. But then my feet hurt,” revealed the young player, all smiles, aware of the ridiculousness of the scene.

“I’d rather you hurt than slip!”

The Madrid midfielder even reveals how much this clumsiness enraged his coach, who did not hesitate afterwards to throw “barbs at him at the table and in training too” before “discussing” it face-to-face.

It was even on the pitch, in the middle of a match, that the coach of the Blues expressed his annoyance at the repeated losses of balance that were putting his team in danger. “When I told the coach that even higher crampons hurt my foot, he replied: ‘I’d rather you hurt than slip!'”.

And Rami can also testify to the intransigence of Deschamps’ staff, since he was also the author of an unfortunate slip in the round of 16 of Euro 2016 against Ireland, from the 2nd minute of the match, which cost the Blues a goal.

So against Belgium, this Monday (6 p.m.), in the round of 16 of Euro 2024, be careful not to repeat this blunder for Deschamps’ men.
