Canadian Archers Chénier and Peters Set to Make Olympic Debut in Paris 2024

This will be the first time for both athletes.

Chénier, 29, has already participated in the Pan American Games, in Toronto in 2015, in Lima in 2019 and in Santiago in 2023.

She had Canada’s best result in the individual recurve event in Santiago, where she reached the quarterfinals. Chenier competed in an all-Canadian final with Kristine Esebua at the Pan American Continental Qualifier in April, which earned the country an Olympic berth in the women’s event.

“I’m really excited,” Chénier said. “Hard work and perseverance over the past decade are paying off.

Peters, meanwhile, made Canadian sporting history at the 2023 world championships. He won silver in the recurve event after losing in the final to reigning Olympic champion Mete Gazoz of Turkey.

It was Canada’s best result ever in men’s recurve at a World Championships. This podium earned Team Canada a quota place for Paris 2024.

On Monday, the 27-year-old, a two-time Pan American Games medalist, recorded his best world ranking of 5th, following his 5th place at the World Cup in Antalya, Turkey.

He then equaled the best result of his career on the circuit, recorded for the first time in April 2023, also in Antalya.

“It’s crazy, it’s the culmination of all the work I’ve done and the challenges I’ve overcome throughout my career. Although it’s just another step in my career, it’s an honor,” he said.

With Chénier and Peters, Canada will also be able to compete in the mixed team event.

At the Pan American Championships in April, they won the bronze medal with a 6-0 victory over the Argentine team.

Canada has yet to win an Olympic medal in archery.

The country’s best result at the Olympics was recorded in Montreal in 1976, where Lucille Lemay finished 5th in the individual event.

Donald Jackson finished 6th at the 1972 Olympics in Munich.

The archery competition will take place from July 25 to August 4 on the Esplanade des Invalides.
