Celebrations in Hamburg as Turkey secures spot in Euro 2024 round of 16

Turkey won 2-1 against the Czech Republic in the last European Championship group match in Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion. Thousands of fans celebrated their team’s entry into the round of 16 in the stadium and at the fan festival on the Heiligengeistfeld.

Car convoys, loud honking, lots of pyrotechnics and a really good atmosphere – this is how thousands of people around the Heiligengeistfeld and in the Kiez celebrated the Turkish national team’s entry into the round of 16 after the final whistle. At its peak, around 17,500 people watched the match against the Czech Republic together at the fan festival. After the final whistle, the police closed the Reeperbahn to car traffic.

Turkish fans also celebrate at the New Horse Market

Hundreds of Turkish fans gathered there, singing and dancing together. A similar scene was also seen at the Neuer Pferdemarkt. Red smoke bombs and Bengalos were repeatedly lit. Apart from a few minor incidents, the evening remained peaceful, according to the police.

18,000 Turkish fans march to the stadium

There were three fan marches in the run-up to the game. The largest started at the Stellingen S-Bahn station. Around 18,000 Turkish fans marched from there across the Binsbarg to the Volksparkstadion. A second march of Turkish fans led from Altona to the fan festival on the Heiligengeistfeld.

Around 3,000 participants in the Czech fan march

Around 3,000 Czech fans also marched together to the Volksparkstadion. Their fan march started at the Bahrenfeld race track.

Reduced S-Bahn timetable in the morning

The first effects of the game were already felt in the morning, namely on the S-Bahn timetable. The trains on line S2 ran every ten minutes in the morning instead of every five minutes – in order to save on staff. As a spokesman for NDR 90.3 said, more staff had to be deployed late in the evening because the game kicked off quite late. The trains then run for longer.
