Centaurs came from behind to beat Caciques

Without even scoring a hit, Heiker Meneses was vital for Centauros de La Guaira to come back and beat Caciques de Distrito 7-5 at the Universitario stadium.

The second baseman scored the tying run in the top of the eighth, starred in a defensive gem at the end of that same inning to put an end to a possible reaction and pushed one of the lines of the difference with a sacrifice.

Caciques got starter Osmer Morales up early with four runs in the first inning, combining singles by Xavier Batista and Josmar Cordero with a fly ball by Antonio Dominguez. But the right-hander was able to pull himself together and he showed why he won the Pitcher of the Year award last season.

Osmer remained on the mound until the sixth inning, allowing only one more run in the third on a slow grounder by Josmar Cordero. In the meantime, Centauros scored three thanks to a sacrifice and home runs by Deiner López and José “Cafecito” Martínez.

The mythological team tied in the eighth with a line through the entire center of the field by Engel Vielma, who drove in Eduard Pinto and Heiker Meneses. At the end of that inning, Caciques tried to react, Kevin Vicuña took his turn – with two teammates on base – and hit a strong line drive for second, but there was Meneses ready to end the home team’s hopes and hang the last out.

La Guaira broke the tie with two lines in the ninth after a pair of sacrifice flies, one by Alexander Palma and the other by the one who ended up being the main protagonist without putting the ball in play.

JC Mejía hit the zero at the bottom of the ninth to score his eighth save of the year. The victory went to Christian Mejías, who scored zero in the eighth of Caciques. And the setback went to Daniel Álvarez’s account.
