CF Montreal Striker Throws Tantrum in Training; Season Marked by Controversies and Frustrations

Not much time goes by without a whiff of controversy hovering over CF Montreal. On Wednesday in training, it was striker Matias Cóccaro who threw a nasty tantrum to the point of leaving training.

Visibly upset when he was fouled by Sunusi Ibrahim during a phase of play in training, Cóccaro really did not appreciate the play continuing and he chose to leave the playing area.

The club’s performance coach, Stefano Pasquali, ran to intercept him so that he wouldn’t leave for the locker room.

Coccaro returned briefly before performing a few drills on his own, away from his teammates, before completely refraining from any activity until the end of practice.

The scene was captured by our journalist Alex Antonacci who was attending the training of the team preparing to host the Philadelphia Union on Saturday evening at Stade Saputo.

Here, then, is another frustration which adds to those already accumulated for Coccaro, who was kept away from the game for 2 months due to a knee injury. Having entered as a substitute in the club’s last three matches, the 26-year-old striker is having a return to play, to say the least, complicated.

“In general, we need to serve our attackers better. We need to involve them more and offer them better balls in the box,” explained full-back Raheem Edwards.

Elsewhere, midfielder Victor Wanyama was back in training with his teammates after being given time off to spend time with his new child.

Rarely, if ever this season, has Laurent Courtois had the chance to field a starting XI with all of his best assets, together, on the field in consecutive matches. Now that all the players, who have been bothered by injuries, are back on the field, the absences of Samuel Piette, Mathieu Choinière, Joel Waterman and Ariel Lassiter, all at the Copa América, certainly do not help the cause of the Montrealers.

The CF Montreal season, which has still not achieved victory in June, has already been marked by the transaction request from Mathieu Choinière and the departures of Olivier Renard and Vassili Cremanzidis.

Montreal currently finds itself in 14th and penultimate place in the Eastern Conference with a total of 19 points in as many games.
